We are well aware of the basic needs of our children. We know that they require a roof over their heads, food in their bellies, and other physical comforts. It should also be clear to us that they require love, care, and attention. But we sometimes neglect the more intricate aspects of their emotional and spiritual well-being. Let’s look at why spiritual and emotional well-being is so important to your child and ways in which we can nourish and grow it.
The importance of spiritual wellness
The value of a child’s spiritual wellness cannot be overstated. Spiritual wellness refers to finding meaning and purpose in life and living in accordance to our values, morals, and beliefs. It gives the child direction and motivation throughout their lives.
Improving spiritual wellness
There are a number of activities that will help your children to develop spiritual wellness. These also serve as opportunities to spend time with them and improve your relationship. Being more involved in their lives will give you the opportunity to share your own values and beliefs and forge a stronger communication between you. Let’s look at some activities and focus points that will improve the spiritual and emotional wellness of your children.
Spend time together
The only way to impart your values and beliefs to your child is by spending time with them. They look up to us as their compass, helping them navigate their identity and beliefs. By being there with them, we can lead by example and show them the essence of spiritual well-being.
Mindfulness and meditation
Practising mindfulness and meditation is a great way for children to regulate their emotions and to connect with the world around them. It’s a path that enlightens them about their surroundings, their role in it, and the interplay between their actions and reactions. Mindfulness exercises will help them expand this awareness.
Meditation, a beautiful extension of mindfulness, might seem tricky with kids, but it’s doable. The rewards? Improved ability to be still, regulate their emotions and concentrate in future. Bedtime is a great opportunity to practise meditation and help calm the children’s mind.
Practise playful parenting
There’s magic in playtime! Encouraging your child’s imaginative and creative side doesn’t just develop empathy and intuition, but it also fuels their sense of joy. Practise playful parenting by finding moments of play everyday. Missing out on these playful sessions means missing out on some great bonding moments. Remember, play isn’t just for kids – it teaches them decision-making, problem-solving, and so much more. Plus, a bonus for you: you get to unleash your inner child. So, why not have a little fun with the kiddos?
Shower Them with Hugs and High-Fives
Love comes in many forms, and for many of us, it’s all about those heartwarming touches. A little PDA (parental display of affection) with your partner in front of your young one shows that affection is a beautiful thing. From hugs to high-fives or even a playful tussle with your little one, these moments matter. However, always be mindful. Every child has their own comfort zone, and it’s crucial to respect that, don’t force touch that they are uncomfortable with. And, if they’re always trying to snuggle up or play with your hair, it’s their little way of saying, “I need some more hugs!”
Practising gratitude
Practising gratitude allows children to keep the positive in mind which will improve their overall happiness. One easy way to practise gratitude is through gratitude journaling. Give your child a journal in which they can write down all the things they are grateful for (or write it for them if they can’t yet write). When they are feeling down, read from and reflect on the journal and remind them of the many things they have to be grateful for. Practising gratitude helps them to appreciate the value of all things.
Get immersed in nature
Nature is a wonderful place for unplugging and improving mental health. Whether it’s the local park, or a weekend camping trip, find time to immerse yourselves in nature regularly. Have some fun in the great outdoors, play some games and get some exercise. It’s a great place to get away from the screens and to appreciate the natural world. Be sure to practise mindfulness when out in nature. Drawing attention to intriguing plants or curious critters will nurture their curiosity. Show them the marvels around, and you’ll see their appreciation for nature flourish.
Appreciate art and music
Art is a brilliant tool for self-expression. By exposing your children to art, be it fine art, music or theatre, they develop an understanding and interest. Encourage them to be creative and teach them new ways of expressing their creativity by attending local art events. Art can be a lot of fun and can be a great place for children to access joy and happiness.
Teach self-care
At the heart of nurturing your child’s spiritual well-being is teaching them the art of self-care. Teaching self-care will ensure that they have the tools to take care of their own spiritual and emotional wellness. Remember, self-care is not just about treating yourself. Guide them to recognise when they need a break or when it’s time to tackle chores and studies head-on so they can truly relax later. Encourage open conversations about their needs, and teach them the significance of understanding and advocating for their well-being. Self-care is a valuable life-skill. Make sure your child understands how to take care of their own well-being.
Encourage positive self-thinking
Self-doubt can do immense damage to your spiritual wellness. Teach your children to be kind to themselves when they make mistakes. Teach them that failure is alright, and that they can, and will learn and improve from it. Encourage positive self-thinking by giving praise where it is due and not putting them down for their mistakes. Their inner voice, and self-worth is guided by your treatment of them. Be kind to them and encourage them to be kind to themselves.
Celebrate their achievements
Every little win in your child’s life is worth a standing ovation! From their first drawing to mastering their ABCs, celebrating these moments boosts their emotional and spiritual confidence. A simple “well done” or a star on a board can mean the world to them. So, keep those accolades coming and maybe even set up a special spot to highlight their awesome achievements.
Giving our children a good basis of spiritual wellness, and imparting the tools to maintain it, sets them up for a healthy fulfilling life. Spiritual and emotional wellness is so valuable to their overall well-being. Let’s give our children the opportunity of a life well lived. Some of us lack the support of a good spiritual upbringing.
