things that drain your energy

A guide to things that drain your energy

Time and energy are two of the most valuable assets a person can have, and needs to be managed as such. While time management is a valuable skill, energy management is just as important – and definitely not talked about enough. Because our energy is what allows us to make the most of our time. One way to manage your energy is to be aware of things that drain your energy.

Food & drink

It’s normal for your energy levels to rise and fall slightly during the day. A common practice done by most people when they feel low on energy is to take in more sugar. What that does instead is, it provides a quick burst of energy, and after picking you up, it drops you hard and leaves you needing more.

Generally, having a meal or snack tends to help re-energise. However, some foods may drain energy. Food containing processed grains like, white bread, white pasta, and white rice may tend to cause more harm than good when it comes to your energy levels. This is due to the fibre-containing outer layer of the grain, known as the bran, being removed during processing. Because of this, processed grains contain lower levels of fibre and tend to be digested and absorbed more quickly than whole grains. Instead stick to foods rich in B vitamins, which your body can use to create energy.

Coffee, alcohol, and energy drinks are also on the list when it comes to giving you the quick energy boost you’re looking for and subsequently dropping you. Having you reach for more.

Habits to avoid

Human beings are creatures of habit. We do what we like and what helps us get through the day, week, month and so on. It’s important to be aware of bad habits that negatively affect your day and drain your energy.

Waking up in the morning and scrolling through your phone. Whether it be checking social media platforms or checking work emails. This is likely to have a negative mental effect, which is not a great way to start any day. If you have a negative outlook towards a problem, you are not being part of the solution. Not only does this drain your energy, but the energy of those around you as well. It is not productive, so stay focused on the positive. Do your best to avoid complaining, gossiping and causing drama, you should not take part in these things or be around people who do those things. It makes for a toxic environment.

Recharge

If you’re feeling mentally, physically, or emotionally drained at the end of each day, it might help to take some steps to recharge your battery. Here are some ideas that may help you energise your mind and body. Take a hot bath using Epsom salts. Epsom salt contains chemicals that are believed to remove toxins, improve muscle function, and reduce inflammation linked to stress. We mentioned above how various foods and drinks can affect your energy levels, so try changing your diet. If you’re too busy to cook your nutritious meals daily, it helps to meal prep on the weeks to be ready for a busy week ahead. Don’t sit in front of the TV as soon as you’re home, make the effort to get a little exercise or doing something you enjoy for 20 – 30 minutes a day will suffice.
