Throughout your life you may find that you gather up and hoard negative emotions. Life can be hard and the gathering of negative thoughts, traumas, and emotions does not make it easier. Facing this inner turmoil is no easy task, but you are not alone in doing so. In my new book “Shadows of my life” I share my experiences with the darker sides of life. I hope to offer comfort and guidance to you through my experience. In the following snippets I share my experience of sexual abuse at a young age and my struggle to take back control of my life.
Revealing my reality
“I started reading and became paralysed as I realised that what was being described in the pamphlet is exactly what Brendon and Boyden had done to me. Words jumped out at me.
Inappropriate Touching
Sweet talk
Gifts
Keeping a secret
Revealing of private parts
I was shocked. I kept reading over and over, trying to understand the sexual abuse references that were made. All the feelings I had towards Brendon were suddenly put into a new alarming context. I felt confused. I was too scared to show the pamphlet to my parents or to say anything to anyone.
I decided to learn more and started gathering information to try and make sense of what had happened to me.”
The first step to dealing with your problems is to know and acknowledge that they exist. It is important to recognise the effects of emotional trauma. Learning about the true nature of my abuse at such a young age was difficult. I tried to move past the emotions without addressing them. I had found a path forward but it did not leave behind my past traumas.
Taking control
“I wanted to take control of my own life even though I was only 12. I felt like an adult in the body of a child.
The saving grace which turned me from a path towards suicide came in my fourteenth year when I started to attend church and God became the solution to my day-to- day struggles.
Outward I was smiling and laughing. I was happy, but I still seemed to struggle with the emotional conflict in my head. I was still seeing those haunting images in the back of my head reminding me of what had happened to me during the time.
I flourished in the permission I gave myself to avoid emotional maturity, too unfit to make proper decisions. The dark room inside of me grew into a shadow that I couldn’t escape. I was neither sunlight, nor shade and my childhood trauma became part of my identity.”
It’s so easy to push your traumas to the back of your mind and pretend they no longer exist. As a child, I tried to take control of my life and I thought I had managed it. I was a kid, living a happy life but I could not ignore what had happened to me. People must deal with the troubles and traumas they face. It can be so hard to deal with these painful memories, but together it is possible to get through them.
Starting the healing journey
“The journey of clearing out my emotional hoarding wasn’t an easy one. As I started to go through the items one by one, identifying their significance in my life, but also the learnings and lessons. I realised how anger and unforgiveness have mutated into other segments of emotions. It was like a virus that begins as a microscopic molecule and then grows and mutates over time taking over my whole being. I wasn’t dealing with only a few emotions anymore. No, I had to deal with an avalanche of negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours.”
Negative thoughts, emotions and the behaviours that result from them will only grow and fester over time. Don’t let the past take control of your present. You may not ever be truly free of your past, but you can learn to deal with your traumas in healthy, positive ways. Recognising the effects of these events on your life is how you start your healing journey, just as I had.
Don’t let the shadows of your past darken your present life. Let me guide you through your journey in clearing out your emotional hoarding. In my new book “Shadows of my life” I give comfort and guidance on a number of traumatic and negative events. I relate to the problems of alcohol abuse, child abuse and molestation, suicide and self harm, resentment, failed marriage, sex and intimacy, and more.
